How To Think About Not Thinking

How does one go about the act of turning off thought? It is a complex process, but also one of the most simple. It is complex because it takes practice and understanding. It is simple because the harder you try to not think, the more you create thought.
For me, the best way to control thought and quiet the mind is to stay focused on the present moment. When you are aware of the very moment you are currently in, it is impossible to have a thought. Thought directs your attention on either the past or the future. You can not think about the present moment, you can only be aware of it.
When I started “being present” the trick was to focus on my breathing. If you can focus your attention on your breath, you bring your mind and body into alignment. If you can practice this often, you can quiet your mind and learn to experience stillness.
